my mother listened to country & my father listened to opera. gotta admit i have a thing for johnny cash although he's certainly a genre crossover; the one type i cannot listen to is 'rap'. it does nothing for me 'cept make my ears bleed. It took me awhile to warm up to Rap and Hip-Hop but there is value in both. Not my favorite genres by any means but there is music in both worth appreciating. I believe that it was Public Enemy that caught my attention as a rap group. They present a perspective expressed in music worth listening to. I've always appreciated "protest" and "anti-establishment" songs.
Of course my breakthrough with Hip-Hop was when Run DMC joined Aerosmith in recording Walk This Way. That one song opened up my appreciation of Hip-Hop.
They'll never be my favorite genres but I won't turn my nose up at either.
It's sort of like a Jackson Pollock painting. You really can't appreciate it until you get up close and personal with it. What do you think of this song? I really like this one and it has such a strong message.

It can be interesting to follow the career of an artist and one of my favorites is Steve Winwood.
Spencer Davis Group (only 14 when he joined).
With Eric Clapton in Blind Faith.
The Traffic years.
Winwood's solo career.

This is a thread on music but I must admit that I'm a fan of Western Movies. Today the Encore Westerns Channel is featuring a Gene Autry marathon and I thought what would be more appropriate than the theme of Western Movie Music for this morning. Often quirky, always fun, the music from the early western movies is quite entertaining. Now I must admit that in my extensive music collection I don't have any western movie music. Not a song to be found but that doesn't mean that it's not worthy of inclusion. I'm going to start with Gene Autry, never to be introduced without also mentioning his wonder horse Champion, and a classic song of his.... Along with Gene we cannot ignore Roy Rogers, with his horse Trigger and dog Bullet (one ups-man-ship on Autry), and his wonderful wife Dale Evans and the closing song from their TV series. Predating both Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in Hollywood was Eddie Dean and this is one of my favorite songs of his... I've save my favorite for last. It is a song I was turned on to while in college and it is so bazaar that even a crazy hard rock nutcase like me couldn't help but fall in love with it. The instrumentation and vocal are so unique that I've never heard anything else like it. Not his most popular song, which is probably Streets of Laredo, here's Tex Ritter doing Blood On The Saddle.... Now I won't "dare" or "double dog dare" anyone to listen to this selection of music but I will accuse them of having "no hair" on their...... LOL

Every morning I enjoy the time when the "political" chit-chat is over and I can focus on my true love that is music. In this I always try to come up with a theme for the day because there is so much music that it would be impossible to address it all. Today I was thinking about old one-hit wonders and 1970, my first year back from the Vietnam War, was a stellar year for one-hit wonders. Here is a selection of some of my favorites from 1970.....
What the hey, no one else may appreciate my choices but I do........

I would say that Rock On is certainly one of the top one-hit wonders. Certainly a favorite of mine. Of course I don't mind others going off on a tangent because it explores even more. One thing that I appreciate is every song that is posted. I listen to each one realizing that there is a reason the person likes it. It may not be my "cup of tea" but it still has value and that's what I look for.

One hit wonders seemed to draw some interest so let' stick with it. I started with 1970 and that expanded into more of the 70's which is cool. Today I'm going into all of the 1980's although admittedly I was mostly lost in the 60's and 70's during most of the 1980's but I did pick up on some of the music. We also need to realize that the One Hit Wonders don't necessarily represent the best in music during the decade. It only represents the music that charted by a group that never had another major charting hit.
But here are some of the One Hit Wonders that I really did enjoy during the 1980's.
Okay, I admit it, I was a bit BAZAAR in the 1980's when it comes to One Hit Wonders but it was fun music that was distinctly different from groups like Van Halen or the Cars. These songs are a bit, or a lot, quirky and I like quirky music.
