Yesterday I spent way too much time on politics and not nearly enough on music so I'm compensating this morning with an album double-play of Carlos Santana's first two albums. I was fortunate to see Santana at the Fillmore West in 1970 and it's the only time I've seen him play live. It was a worthwhile experience and these two albums exemplify how great he was especially in his early years.
"Santana" - 1969 Side one 1."Waiting" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, J. Areas, D. Brown, M. Carabello, M. Shrieve) – 4:07 2."Evil Ways" (Clarence "Sonny" Henry) – 3:58 3."Shades of Time" (C. Santana, G. Rolie) – 3:13 4."Savor" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, J. Areas, D. Brown, M. Carabello, M. Shrieve) – 2:47 5."Jingo" (Babatunde Olatunji) – 4:23
Side two 1."Persuasion" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, J. Areas, D. Brown, M. Carabello, M. Shrieve) – 2:36 2."Treat" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, J. Areas, D. Brown, M. Carabello, M. Shrieve) – 4:46 3."You Just Don't Care" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, J. Areas, D. Brown, M. Carabello, M. Shrieve) – 4:37 4."Soul Sacrifice" (C. Santana, G. Rolie, Marcus Malone, D. Brown) – 6:34
"Abraxas" - 1970
LP side 1 1. "Singing Winds, Crying Beasts" (Instrumental) Mike Carabello 4:51 2. "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" Peter Green/Gábor Szabó 5:22 3. "Oye Como Va" Tito Puente 4:16 4. "Incident at Neshabur" (Instrumental) Alberto Gianquinto, Carlos Santana 4:57
LP side 2 1. "Se a Cabo" José Areas 2:50 2. "Mother's Daughter" Gregg Rolie 4:25 3. "Samba pa Ti" (Instrumental) Santana 4:54 4. "Hope You're Feeling Better" Rolie 4:11 5. "El Nicoya" Areas 1:30

Today I'm posting an album from one of my favorite songwriters and performers.
PS. On the album cover is a woman claimed to be Cassandra Peterson, better known as Alvira, Mistress of the Dark, that gained fame as the whacky host of the late night "B" flick horror program Movie Macabre in Los Angeles. She doesn't actually remember the photo session (for whatever reason) but based upon the numerous photographs taken she simply says, "It must be me."

While serving in Vietnam I managed to acquire a reel-to-reel tape machine several months into my tour. I was typically in combat assignments were we didn't receive Armed Forces Radio but being with the artillery we always had a generator. My girlfriend sent me one tape and it was the only music we had. It contained the following two albums.
We literally wore out the tape machine and this tape listening to it before I returned to The World on Dec 22, 1969. I left it there and have never purchased those albums because of my Vietnam memories but I will never forget the music. These are two albums I'll post for others but I won't listen to them as great as they are. It's 44 years later but the memories of war will never go away.

My first introduction to Tom Waits was a by chance thing. Canada's much music aired the movie big time. they ran an eight hour loop back in the 80's and though i came in half way through it i stayed up waiting for it to rerun that night...no VCR at the time..heh hehe
i give you a movie that really shows you what sort of guy this man really is...i know i know this the full album thread... i love any movie he acts in...love watching him in interviews, Letterman loves the guy...
i recall his angst at quitting smoking thinking it would ruin his voice...lol

Coming from Los Angeles in the 1960's we had a plethora of local groups that gained fame including Spirit with Randy California (his real name) and the Doors with Jim Morrison. One of the groups that I really appreciated that didn't gain quite as much fame as Spirit and the Doors is the Arthur Lee group Love. As a member of a local LA band in the '60's we covered more Love songs than any other group.
Arthur Lee was a unique songwriter/arranger and Love's music is a bit different than most people would remember from the 60's. Arthur Lee's personal life was also interesting. In 1996 he was sentenced to life in prison under California's 3-Strike Law for negligent discharge of a firearm (just shooting off a pistol in the air) but had two prior drug convictions (some claim there as an assault conviction but that isn't true) from the 1980's and as a felon was prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. Three victimless crimes and yet he was sentenced to life because of absurd mandatory sentencing guidelines. That sentence was later reduced to 12-year and then after serving 5 1/2 years an Appeals Judge threw out the conviction due to misconduct by the prosecutor.
I'm going to present two of Love's albums while omitting their first album that is also very good IMHO. De Capo, Love's 2nd album that I present here, is unique to my knowledge because it's the first rock album that only had one song. Revelation, for an entire side.
Love - De Capo All tracks composed by Arthur Lee, except where indicated.
Side one 1."Stephanie Knows Who" – 2:33 2."Orange Skies" (Bryan MacLean) – 2:49 3."¡Que Vida!" – 3:37 4."7 and 7 Is" – 2:15 5."The Castle" – 3:00 6."She Comes in Colors" – 2:43
Side two 1."Revelation" (Lee, Bryan MacLean, Johnny Echols, Ken Forssi) – 18:57
I'll let Wikipedia introduce the next album from Love.
Love - Forever Changes All songs written by Arthur Lee, except where noted.
Side one 1."Alone Again Or" (Bryan MacLean) – 3:16 2."A House Is Not a Motel" – 3:31 3."Andmoreagain" – 3:18 4."The Daily Planet" – 3:30 5."Old Man" (MacLean) – 3:02 6."The Red Telephone" – 4:46
Side two 1."Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale" – 3:34 2."Live and Let Live" – 5:26 3."The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This" – 3:08 4."Bummer in the Summer" – 2:24 5."You Set the Scene" – 6:56
STOP - GO BACK!!! If you skipped playing these I recommend you take the time. Regardless of your favorite genre if you appreciate rock music these two albums are iconic. Very well produced and recorded these albums were both reflective of the times but also represented unique innovation by the group. I highly recommend taking the time, putting on the headphones, burn one if you've got it, and going on a unique musical odyssey as each track seems to take a slightly different direction. Amazing albums that I'd put "up against" any other two albums by any group of the era.

Change this word count stuff so we can post without having to conform. Or learn the "trick" of how to do this. The Youtube "link" generally has enough "words" to pass the minimum word count but to have it show up as "words" try hitting the space bar a couple of times after inserting the link (at the end of the link). All of a sudden it will count the "address" as words and usually pass the "minimum 10 words" criteria.

It's a "Two-fer" Tuesday......
Even us heavy rock addicts needed something to soothe our souls from time to time.

1971 - Two groups were at the TOP of my personal list in 1971 and #1 was Led Zeppelin that I still consider the greatest rock band of all time. In 1971 Led Zeppelin released their Led Zeppelin IV album, often voted the best album in rock history, that included "Stairway to Heaven" that has often been voted the best song in rock history.
The other group, my #2 group that I'm focusing on, was Deep Purple and they released "Fireball" in 1971. It is a truly great album IMHO.
The following year, 1972, Deep Purple released what many consider to be it's finest album "Machine Head" that include Smoke On The Water that has become a standard in rock history and, last time I checked, holds the record for the largest number of guitar players playing the same song at the same time.
Special bonus track: Hush from "Shades of Deep Purple" that was the group's first album and first hit single in 1968.

I spent virtually all of 1969 in Vietnam killing people and was completely unaware of the music scene back in the United States. I didn't hear about Woodstock until I returned and there had been a lot of outstanding music released while I was completely out of touch with "The World" as we called the US. I had much catching up to do and one of the albums that impressed me the most was "Stand Up" by Jethro Tull.
