A report for the Welsh Assembly has advised dropping plans for fines to be introduced for the parents of truants. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-23602603Is imposing fines on parents a good or effective method for dealing with truancy? Is it something that other countries have used successfully?

And can you fix the Whalean spelling of "truent" to the English spelling of "truant" in the thread title?

fines don't work and only serve to punish already desperately poor people, which in turn harms the children it's attempting to help...
a teacher friend told me of children being sent to school every day and never getting there or just walking away after they arrived...the police would find them on the streets return them home, they would in the front door and out the back door...one girl she told me about was already into prostitution at age 8 and attended school about one day per week...other than lock them up 24/7 there is nothing you can do...fining the mother wouldn't change the situation...
