He isn't having a change of heart at all. Kevin Rudd will introduce a gay marriage bill in the first 100 days of parliament and Tony says he will oppose it. He won't even allow his MP's a conscience vote on the issue, he is so deathly afraid that gay marriage will be someday legal here.
It terrible to think that in a few weeks, this man will likely be Prime Minister.

Ah the pre-election times when politicians go all zen on us - "the willow that does not bend, breaks" and all that Sweetness, light and suggestions of struggling with conscience seeking the great compromise.
What a load of old rot. Abbott is a severely conservative almost reactionary politician and this is pure pap. No way will Cardinal Pell allow Tony to give the nod to even a conscience vote for the Coalition on same-sex marriage. I'm not even sure Kev is fair dinkum about it either. This is one of those times when the legislature is out of step with public opinion. If it went to a referendum it would go like Black Caviar and fly past the post.

If it went to a referendum I am not sure it would pass. The church would start with their scare tactics like they usually do, and brainwash people.

sometimes politicians may be in favor of progress but recognize it's unpopular to suggest it just getting elected has priority, coming out with radical ideas scare off voters... other times people really do change, I did... and other times as you suggest they just go with the flow...
