Women are to be allowed to become bishops in the Church in Wales following a vote of its governing body today.
A Church in Wales committee had recommended a second bill to amend the Church's constitution in order to accommodate clergy who don't want to work under a woman.
But this won't now be necessary after the archdeacon of Llandaff, Peggy Jackson, said it would have seen discrimination written into the Church's constitution.
The archdeacon instead tabled an amendment that sees clerics who can't accept the authority of a woman accommodated via a "code of practice" rather than a change in the Church's constitution.
And in a move certain to enrage conservatives, whose concerns the constitutional change was designed to allay, the governing body backed the archdeacon.
The archdeacon's bill requires the Church to draw up the code of practice "without delay".
The Church's favoured option, rejected today, would have seen the consecration of women bishops delayed by two years while arrangements were made to accommodate conservatives.
The bill passed today was effectively the same bill rejected by the Church's governing body in a vote on the issue five years ago.

About time! It leaves the Church of England as the only Anglican church in the UK still holding on to such gender discrimination.
