Geez. The mindset of these people is truly scary, to say the least. So.....a western education is a sin; but murdering 20 students in their sleep is desirable???
Since 2009, Boko Haram has sown murder and mayhem in Nigeria's northeastern region. The Islamic militant group's name translates from the local Hausa language as "Western education is a sin."
Boko Haram militants often target schools and churches. In 2011 and 2012, Christmas attacks were blamed on them.
Jonathan created a new wing of the military to specifically deal with the insurgency.
In May, Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeastern states. He cited "terrorists" who have caused a "a near breakdown of law and order."
One of the three states is Yobe, where Sunday's attack took place.
It was the third attack on a school in four months in Yobe.
The ongoing violence in this predominantly Muslim region has claimed thousands of lives.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have accused the military of committing atrocities against civilians."
And then.....here's the U.S.'s new S.O.S. makng his totally asinine and insufficient statement about this group:
During a May trip to the country, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Nigeria "has acknowledged that there have been some problems" and was "working to try to control it."

As so often, we only get the last paragraph of the story. The founder of Boko Haram was a simple, saintly old soul, and the Nigerian government killed him and persecuted his followers until they got cross. Just because the Crusaders control the Noise Machine, it doesn't mean everyone is mad - just constantly provoked by the strutters.

Yes, the Nigerian government were total gits but how does that excuse mass murder of kids for wanting an education? You're right in your assertion regarding only hearing one side of the story but that is absolutely no excuse for these total and utter bas*star*ds and what they do. My school has just had education consultants from two foreign countries, pushing uni places in America and the UK. Frankly, a western education is desired and quite right too. The Boko bunch of nutters will rot in hell for what they do and, if my wish comes true, they'll start tomorrow.

WE should be very very careful to over simplify this situation. It is not a clear-cut case of Muslims killing Christians, or people being murdered because of Western Education. There is huge issues regarding Tribalism in Nigeria. There are fights over the control of the oil revenue. And let us not forget that Christians in Nigeria have also been attacking and killing Muslims and burning Mosques. This is thus is very complex issue, and vilifying one group based on a stance on education alone is to totally misunderstand the issue.

If that's reason enough, the wole world would end up killing each other.

While "religion" is often used to rationalize atrocities it isn't the religion that is the problem. It's the atrocities that are the problem.
What I find throughout the world is that many people are living with barbaric beliefs because the world is barbaric and there isn't any nation that can claim to be an inspiration for others to imitate. Ideally the United States should be that nation but we fail because we're a nation of war and tyranny when it comes to our international relations. We've supported far too many tyrannical regimes (and continue to do so) and can not claim the "moral high ground" that our ideals should have established. Until there is a nation that actually represents "Freedom, individual rights, equality, and moral superiority" the world of men will not evolve. People need to be "inspired by example" but there are no national examples of how people should treat others today.

America spends million to support Israel and balance the arms by spending millions of arming other countries in the region....all given for free.
Imagine if at least some of that waste was used to educate people in poor countries and what would probably happen.
Extremism comes from poverty and ignorance; education would reduce both. I've had a really good wander around the FPI and Bakasi forum strongholds in Jakarta; they're poorer areas where the people have little chance of much out of life so, when some idiot wanders along with promise of better under radical Islam, many follow out of hope.
Remove the reasons for their desperation and you remove the recruitment base used by the evil. Of course, the US arms industry is a powerful lobby group so they'll want the extremists to multiply as that means more arms sales as you'll end up fighting them.

At least for the United States we have a problem. The most the United States has ever given in humanitarian aid in a year was $4.9 billion (2010) while we spend hundreds of billions of dollars bombing and killing people.
We spend more on creating enemies than we do on helping friends.

I don't spend much time 'excusing' people - people act like people mostly, i.e. badly but predictably, and it is the business of more advanced humans to calm their sub-animal behaviour if they can.

One thing we do know is that people learn more from example than they do from what they're told. A study found that parents that have bad driving habits translated into bad driving habits for their children even when they told their children to drive safely.
A major problem in the world today is that people don't have a "good example" to go by.

Agreed. We are short of decent government actions (and I need more words, it seems!)

As standards slide, the next generation simply get worse than the previous one. In the case of violence, it expands as people seek revenge and tends to spiral down to chaos. There are plenty of good examples to follow but the big money follows evil; never good.
