I thought this might be a bit of fun...but maybe an explanation of it,for non-UK punters, might be in order.
There is a Radio 4 programme, which has been going since a few years before I was born (though not then on Radio 4) which invites celebrities to talk about their lives and to nominate 8 records which have significance to them and which they would take with them to a Desert Island on which they may be stranded for eternity to remind them of their life before the island, (and they are expected to say why the record is important to them). They are also required to choose just one of the 8 to rescue from a tidal wave.
They also get to take the Bible and the Works of Shakespeare, but can choose another book for themselves..........and can also take a luxury....which can't be anything to keep them in touch with the folk left behind or anything which would help them to get off the island.
I checked with he who must be obeyed on here......and he would like the 8 videos divided into four posts of two videos each....more for page loading purposes than the bandwidth hogging ones I was worried about.
I'll start with mine....but bear in mind, I'm not a music person...in fact I was born without any artistic sensibilities of any kind at all (and I'm not joking!).......so I did really struggle finding eight discs.....but it will give you the idea.

1) When I was wee,I listened every Saturday to Children's Favourites with Uncle Mac. Uncle Mac retired (or maybe even died..nobody talked dead to kids in those days)..but the programme continued for years with other presenters, and different programme names but the same format.
When my own kids were wee, Junior Choice..the Children's Favourites replacement hosted by Ed "Stewpot" Stewart was what we listened to when I had control of the telly and the radio (and everything else)...and, if any song from those days was a singalong favourite...it has to be "Puff the Magic Dragon" (this version by Peter, Paul and Mary)
It won't just bring to mind my childhood and that of my kids....but it is the song I used to sing to my grandchildren (along with "Nellie the Elephant")..and if you knew how badly I carry a tune...it will always also remind me of my toddler grandchildren rolling their eyes, clapping their hands over their ears and humouring granny (as they do to still to this day) as I sang tunelessly.
2) What will always bring to mind my father....and to a lesser extent the rest of my family as well, is "My Boy Lollipop" (by Millie Small) We got a Dansette record player for Christmas in the mid sixties with a small selection of records (chosen by my parents)...and my father was besotted with that one. When it was his turn to pick the record..the rest of us used to get out of the livingroom at some speed! The pain for the rest of us only stopped when I left the disc too near the open fire and it warped! (accidentally of course!)

3) I have a sister, two years and one week younger than me, with a brother(now deceased) between us in age...and my sister and I always shared a room..and agreed about nothing..so she had posters of the Beatles and Elvis on her side of the room....and I had the Rolling Stones, Billy Fury and Johnny Mathis on mine.....she was a Rangers supporter, and I was a Celtic one (if you understand Scottish fitba rivalries.) I really didn't mind the Beatles or Elvis, tbh...bar she liked them........so I used to play eternally. this Billy Fury one, because she thought he was just an Elvis impersonator and it used to annoy her.
4)I swithered about the next one..my courting days were always soundtracked by the jukebox in the local chip shop.but I plumped for the one time I got taken to and paid in by the eventual husband to see a real live band.......so it is The Honeycombs with "Have I the Right"
I did see the Kinks and Hermans Hermits in The Two Red Shoes in Elgin...but I paid myself into see them.

5) When we separated, twenty three years later,,,,I admit I did play this a lot (Runrig -Every River)
We're still not divorced twenty three years later, AFAIK....but now I don't cown when listening to it...and we now meet up every second week during the football season to support our No 2 grandson playing in the Highland League (though I'm not sure his current partner knows that). We get on better now we don't have to live together!
6) My No 1 Grandson introduced me to my next choice (Carolina Liar "I'm Not Over") It is one of the many I have downloaded for him over the years, but one of the few I actually liked and have on my hard drive...though I have it in the acoustic version, which I prefer....but for remembering, it would have to be this one as it is more him..

7) Next is The Tartan Army singing "Flower of Scotland" in Cardiff it will remind me of football..not just national football but of my years working in the stand at my local football club as a teenager.and attending matches at my local Highland League ground to watch my almost-ex playing.....plus my current obsession with attending every game I can to watch my No 2 grandson playing ...and it will also remind me of my pride when he was chosen for an under 17 Scotland squad ...even if it was only the one call- up...and at least he did score.
Not overly keen on it as the Scottish National Anthem, tbh..but makes a great football anthem for the National team against England!
8) And finally..of course Caledonia (this version by Dougie Maclean)
because if I'm going to need nothing else on a desert island.I'm going to want to remember the cooling haar, the rain, the mountains and the colours of my home soil as I sit and look at sand (and, hopefully at least palm trees)...and sweat like a pig while scratching at my prickly heat rash....and that is the one I'd rescue from the waves...because it won't just remind me of my country......but also my family living in it as I am being miserable in the heat. I may not be thinking of them that fondly as I resent the fact they are cool while I'm not..........but I will be thinking of them!
For my book..I think I'll go for Scotland's Story by Tom Steel...and for my luxury I'll have an embroidery frame and an unlimited supply of 16 count aida and embroidery threads. I may find time to produce the cross stitch family tree I'm always promising myself..but will need lots of replacements of materials as I discard all my mistakes.
And that was all as difficult as I thought it was going to be..and I feel kinda guilty that there is nothing to remind me specifically of my grand daughters....but then I have never got my head around the JLS type music, anymore than I did the Bay City Rollers when the daughter swanned about in trousers with a band of tartan on the bottom of the legs and sporting a tartan scarf however hot it was.

Ok, I'll give this one a bash, although I'll probably disagree with my own choices as soon as I've posted them.
I would have to start with a bit of Gilbert and Sullivan - couldn't live without that! Very hard to pick one song, of course, and even harder to find a decent version of that song on youtube, but I think it would probably be this song (apologies for having to rely on a random amateur production version, but it's not too bad):
I would also definitely have to include this song, probably my favourite ever:

I would also have to include some folk music, and probably something like this, to include Maddy Prior's beautiful voice:
My favourite band for many, many years was Blue Oyster Cult, so to not include them would be criminal. I've always loved this song since I first heard the original recording off their first album, but I would have to take this recording because of the guitar solo, and the way that Buck Dharma really lets fly and shows why he is among the best guitar players ever:

You might by now be noticing a theme - I can't restrict myself remotely to one kind of music, as much as I am a particular fan of one general genre. For me it's about the spirit and the beauty and the depth of the music, and it doesn't come much better than this:
I could never neglect prog rock either, and this song would have to be the ultimate expression of that:

My last post already. This is hard!
Black Sabbath would have to be represented, and for me that would have to mean this song:
One choice left! So many I have had to miss out. I think I need a bigger island!
Really tough to only have one more choice, and there are so many genres, artists and songs that I could have included. I just couldn't miss out this sound, though:
As for a book, it would have to be a collection of the Belgariad 5-book series, by David Eddings. One of the few things I can (and do, from time to time) read over and over again without ever getting bored of it. My luxury item would be very, very dull and predictable - a toothbrush!
So there you have it. Oh, if I had to save one of those songs from a tsunami, I don't think I could ever choose - I'd probably just give in at that point and throw myself in instead.

Well, I don't need the Bible or the works of Shakespeare because those are worthless and I don't need records, cd's or digital recordings that all require electricity that I wouldn't have for very long. I might take a guitar so that I could create my own music in the evenings for personal enjoyment.
What I do need is a good book on navigation that provides ocean currents and trade wind information because I'm not going to stay on a desert island for long. What I would have is a theme song though, whether I have it on record, cd, digital, or just in my mind as I build my boat or raft to get the hell off the island.
For those that choose to stay on the desert island I wish you well and will send help when I can but I ain't stayin' and will soon be gone.
