First it was Jamaica "back street" marijuana tourism and now Uruguay is breaking into the market with legal $1 marijuana sales.
We really need to get off our butts here in the US. American "Loadies" from the 60's and 70's have demonstrated that we can grow the best damn marijuana in the world and we're letting other countries get a serious head start on the pot tourism business. It used to be just Amsterdam that pretty much operated as the only marijuana tourism destination and not it moved to the Americas but the United States is going to be left in the dust if we don't jump on the bus.
At a dollar a gram Uruguay is bringing the price into alignment with what it really should be as an agricultural product although it could still drop considerably more. We could actually produce top quality marijuana buds for 1/2 the cost in Uruguay (50 cents a gram) and still be making a huge profit if it was legal without excessive and absurd taxation. In fact quality bud can be produced for less than 7 cents a gram but don't tell anyone because the packaging is more expensive than the pot.
Come on America, we're missing out on potentially a multi-billion dollar tourist industry because we're behind the times (again)!!
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Uruguay's drug czar says the country plans to sell legal marijuana for $1 per gram to combat drug-trafficking, according to a local newspaper.
The plan to create a government-run legal marijuana industry has passed the lower house of Congress, and President Jose Mujica expects to push it through the Senate soon as part of his effort to explore alternatives in the war on drugs.
The measure would make Uruguay the first country in the world to license and enforce rules for the production, distribution and sale of marijuana for adult consumers.
Marijuana sales should start in the second half of 2014 at a price of about $1 per gram, drug chief Julio Calzada told a local newspaper, El Pais, on Sunday.
That's an eighth or less of what marijuana costs at legal medical dispensaries in some U.S. states.
