The great thing about science is that it requires duplication of research so any false information is flushed out and has no negative long term effects. There have been numerous cases of fraud in science, just like everywhere else in society, but science is self-correcting because it demands that the research be duplicated independently,

Figure 5. MMP and EGFR inhibitors block SMC wound repair. There is an allegation of photoshopping with regard to Figure 5 of this 2012 paper and the Australian author may have modified photos in Figure 5 to make them consistent with the paper's results. A young Japanese researcher also has been accused of committing similar academic misconduct in her recent study published by Nature and it may be tempting for any researchers to edit and modify photos using photo editing tools. But embellish their papers should not be equated with falsifying them and the study overall cannot be completely discredited just because of few inconsistent photos.
