Man on our way north to Tennessee I saw a billboard advertising Pearl River gambling resort, I wanted to go but I refrained. Maybe next time.

I've never seen the attraction in gambling myself, to be honest. Just seems like throwing money away - when I have tried it I just feel the impending loss of my cash, rather than the excitement of the slim chance of winning some more!

Are you my husband in disguise? He tells me to just send them a check and be done with it, he says you are just throwing your money away. The house always wins...lol.

I'm not as big a card player as my mom, but there's a joke in my family that me and my cousin were born with a hand full of cards cuz our moms played poker for 9 mos straight. Mom went to Vegas 2-3 times a yr. I might go once every 2-3 yrs. just don't ever plan to leave with any money and you'll have a good time. LOL

I don't gamble but I do play poker. Poker is not a game of chance but instead a game of skill. Isn't that just one step away from saying 'I haven't got a problem, I'm just on a bit of a losing streak at the moment - things will pick up, as long as I keep going'?!! Seriously, poker is a game of skill, as are many other possible gambling methods (there's alot of skill involved in studying form and picking winning horses, for example), but there's still an element of luck involved, and it still to me just seems like a way of throwing money away. I don't mind playing something for pennies - that can be fun. Once the stakes get into pounds (or dollars), though, it is fear of losing my existing money that becomes my predominant emotion, not anticipation of the possibility of winning some more, and that's not 'fun' anymore. I suppose it's an adrenalin' thing, and I'm just not an 'adrenalin junkie' kind of person, I guess - there is no force on earth that would make me jump off a perfectly good platform with a bit of elastic tied to my back, or jump out of a perfectly good plane with a sheet in a rucksack! If people are into that kind of thing, good luck to them - I'll be happily sitting in the pub with a beer and letting them get on with it!

Hey, whatever floats your boat. Poker can be called a game of skill, I guess but none the less it is still gambling. When you are playing a game of poker there is always more chance than skill. Once those cards are shuffled what you draw is chance. You might say a chance to show your skill but it costs money that you might lose. (Geez, now I sound like my husband). Question, is the skill also the poker face when you draw a losing hand..or is it knowing when to fold your card?
Has anyone here seen the movie "Lost in America"? It is hilarious. It is an older movie but shows what can happen to when you gamble.

Everyday's a gamble.
You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run... etc.
Somebody should write a song.
;D

We just have to have a bar here. To sit down and stay awhile is fine but we need Smartie's touch on bar making. What say you Smartie? Huh? Huh? Will ya? Huh?

It is hilarious. It is an older movie but shows what can happen to when you gamble. Anytime a "losing hand" can win it is a game of skill. Many mistakenly believe that the results in poker depend upon the turn of a card and that is not the case. How and when a person bets (and how much they bet), calls, or folds is far more important than the actual cards. I took me about two years (and about $2,000) of constant play to learn how to play "no limit Texas Hold'em" poker and I'm worthless at other forms of poker. Once I learned how to play I never lost money again because I know how, when, and how much to bet. I obviously lose some hands but I tend to limit my losses while exploiting my gains and that is the key to poker. Most people bet too often and over-bet the hands they have. By way of example, in Texas Hold'em a pair of Aces on the deal is the best starting hand but if three people are in the hand it has less than a 50% chance of winning. Unlikely that a person would drop out with a pair of aces in the hole but unless they can get someone else to fold they face bad odds out of the gate. Sitting on the "button" which is the last person to bet is a huge advantage as well and a losing hand can often be won by the person sitting on the button. It's a great game of skill where the turn of a card, while it can affect a single hand, doesn't affect the overall outcome. A skilled poker player always beats a less skilled poker player over time.
