How about some whiskey in a jar?? I know this isn't a bar but you don't find jars in bars.

I want to hear about everyone's hobbies...to see what we all have in common. Here's mine....
1) Genealogy 2) Reading (I have a book club that meets once a month to discuss what we read. We enjoy everything....incluidng fiction, non-fiction, and we throw in a classic at least once a year. 3) Writing (I have been writing since I was very young) Just started a huge project that will require a lot of research. and dedication. IF I can pull myself away from these political boards....perhaps I'd get more done on that project! 4) Grandsons (I have two....ages 6 and 4 and they are adorable) They keep me young at heart. 5) Restoring our 100-acre ranch to native prairie grasses. When the explorers first came through Texas, there was beautiful native prairie grasses....mainly Little Bluestem and Big Bluestem for as far as the eye could see. This has greatly disappeared through the years and most of the large tracts of lands are privately owned. It's up to the private owners (like me and my husband) to try to restore and preserve what once was for future generations to see and enjoy.....and to treasure it.

Buffalo would be nice. I'd also like to have a few Texas Longhorns there. But since we don't live there full time, would worry too much about them and would have to have someone else see after them.

JP5 I can understand that concern but of course Texas Longhorns don't represent the natural wildlife of Texas. Go for the prairie dog colony. They don't need watching over and they're so cute.

I believe that JP5, as a DAR, probably had ancestors that fought in the Civil War as did I because both of us trace our family history back to the American Revolution and so many of the descendants of those families that were involved in the American Revolution were also involved in the Civil War. Sadly it was a war that should never have occurred because slavery should have ended in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence.

It was to say the least a very heartbreaking view of something that should never have occurred but it did and now we have history. My husband and I both have ancestors that were linked to the Civil War. My great, great, grandfather was killed while on a recruiting mission. My husbands great, great grandfather was a POW at Point Lookout in Md. www.plpow.com/PrisonHistory.htm He was at Chickamauga so that visit had special meaning. He fought in some of the major battles. I forgot my camera..imagine that. I had to take pictures with my iphone. I will down load them and share.

We have jackrabbits, deer, wild turkey's and even had some beautiful red-headed ducks stop by our lake last year on their way to Canada. We also lease out a portion of the acreage to cattle. With our drought, ranchers are in dire need of grasses for their cattle and it works out great. They "mow" some of our acreage and actually it's helpful to re-establishing the native grasses. We saw a few quail when we first bought the place.....but the quail population has pretty much disappeared over the past several years. Different reasons for it. The most popular reason is that they had some kind of disease "worms in their eyes" and died off. We even tried to reintroduce them a couple years back.....but I think all we did was provide some snacks for the coyotes. They were quickly gone......sad.

I had ancestors who fought on each side.....but mostly it was for the Confederate side. It was a horrible war where brothers fought against brothers, but obviously it had to be fought.....and ultimately it ended as it should have. Our country as a whole has been the better for it. Instead of trying to rewrite history, or ignoring it, it's best to study it and learn from it.

If history repeats itself I hope that is one era that is never repeated. We have been to Vicksburg too but it has been a few years. We want to go to Gettysburg, his g, g, grandfather fought in that battle also.

Slavery should never have occurred and our country would have been stronger. If history repeats itself I hope that is one era that is never repeated. While slavery ended over 100 years ago racial oppression continues and has actually increased in recent times. Racial prejudice is actually at all time highs today. While many know I've condemned Republicans and Democrats for their racial prejudice I find that problem also very serious among Libertarians today. While I have no studies to back this up I'd estimate that about 50% of Libertarians express anti-black racial prejudice which puts them about 1/2 way between Democrats and Republicans and overcoming that is a major challenge for me.
Removing racial prejudice can only be accomplished from within a political ideology and the greatest problem is self-realization that it exists. People that are racially prejudiced, by nature, are the first ones to deny that they're racially prejudiced.
