Fox News, the "Mouth Piece of Republicans" exposes the religious bigotry of the Right. news.yahoo.com/why-fox-news-scandal-good-news-reza-aslan-221802800.html I highly recommend watching the video. If Fox (FAUX) News is representative of the Right-Wing, which I believe is historically hard to dispute, then the Right Wing has a serious problem with religious bigotry and prejudice.

Oh good Lord! Your entire thing is about trying to push your view that all conservatives are a bunch of racists! Do you realize just how many issues of the day where you do just that? First off, Fox News is so popular and beats out the mainstream news outlets BECAUSE its commentators question fairly and don't simply engage in a 'love fest' for those they agree with as say MSNBC does. It's why many liberals and Independents watch it as well. And trying to make the case that because of this one commentator's questioning, which wasn't racist, btw, that all conservatives are racists is quite ridiculous. It's like saying that because you often defend the liberal position on issues of the day, then you MUST support Anthony Wiener's pervert actions.....therefore you must support perverts or sexists??? See how ridiculous that is?
Seriously, when someone takes every issue and tries to somehow make it into "conservatives/Republicans are racists," they lose credibility.

Then please explain why Lauren Green was focused on the Muslim status of a highly qualified author of a book on Jesus as opposed to addressing the content of the book? The video clearly reflects the fact that Green was attacking Reza Aslan for being a Muslim. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind about this. I'm sorry if the actions of Republicans reflect racism or religious intolerance as I merely point these facts out. I don't go out of my way to make them up. It's the Republicans that embarrass themselves through their own statements. It's not like we could make-up statements by members of Fox News like a recent male conservative talk show host shouted at a woman to "know your role and shut your mouth." news.yahoo.com/fox-finger-pointer-woman-know-role-203518449.htmlI don't make this stuff up but of course that is being ignored. Instead of listening to the message the Republican response is "shoot the messenger."

I hate to break it to you, but a muslim is not "qualified" to write a book about Jesus. But even still, I doubt that Christian leaders will call for jihad over it.

The question wasn't so silly, however. It's an anchor's job to ask the questions that a viewer might want to ask if they had the opportunity. And I'm sure more than one person wonders why it would interest a Muslim to write abut Jesus. I have heard that Muslims believe Jesus to be an important prophet, but not the son of God. Whether that was this author's reasons for writing about him, I don't know. But it a relevant question and in no way implies racism. It's no different than if the anchor asked a Jewish author what made him write a book about Jesus. It's called curiosity.

Shiva---I don't recall, but were you equally outraged over this religious prejudice during the last election regarding Romney's religion and faith?
NBC is devoting a full one-hour episode of “Rock Center with Brian Williams” to examining Mormonism. The special airs Thursday evening. Hopefully the network’s coverage of Mormonism will not fan the flames of religious prejudice — something the media has frequently done during the 2012 presidential campaign.

A person with four degrees, including one in the New Testament, and fluency in biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades isn't qualified to write a book? It is also interesting when people use the word "jihad" when they don't understand what the term means. It has been misappropriated by some Islamic organizations to rationalize acts of terrorism but acts of terrorism violate the Quran. Based upon the Quran the "Great Jihad" is the internal, individual, spiritual struggle toward self-improvement, moral cleansing and intellectual effort. The "Lessor Jihad" is the struggle to improve society, preventing the exploitation of the poor or vulnerable.

While I don't recall actually addressing the prejudice against Romney because he's a Mormon it is certainly outrageous but it predominately came internally from within the Republican Party by evangelical Christians and I have expressed outrage over the bigoted religious prejudice of evangelical Christians extensively over the years. Personally during the 2012 presidential elections I stuck to the issues and there was more than enough to condemn both Romney and Obama on related to the issues which is why I voted for neither of them. I don't vote for the "lesser of two evils" which is what Obama and Romney represented in 2012.
I don't know which "news media" was condemning Romney for his Mormon beliefs but I never saw it. About the only major news source I don't follow consistently is Fox News so perhaps they attacked Romney for his religious beliefs. In any case it wasn't nearly as bad as the national response to Kennedy being a Catholic in 1960 which played a huge role in the opposition to his presidential bid. Could a Catholic govern the United States was a major issue in 1960. I don't recall that Romney's ability to govern as president because he was a Mormon being questioned during 2012.
From an intellectual perspective Mormonism is a bit bazaar though but I won't go into that here.

The interviewer was simply trying to figure out his motive for doing so. He dodged most of her questions by pointing to all his degrees, but if he's a devout Islamic, he's going against his own beliefs... which always appears suspicious. She was interviewing a wolf in sheep's clothing and asking the questions most people were thinking. He was just there to sell more books... can't buy the kinda publicity he got from FoxNews. He should be grateful for all the attention.

There is nothing moral about forcing women to cover their hair and faces, not allow them to attend schools or drive a car, to name but a few ways. And this is their religion that tells them to do that. There is nothing moral about burying a woman in sand up to her neck and throw rocks at her head until she's dead.....because she was raped!! And there is nothing moral about cutting off the head of a British soldier on the street.

To be honest I don't typically watch the nightly news as I have too many other more important things to do. I'm not familiar with Brian Williams per se but I did look up the only link that came up where Brian Williams discussed Mormonism with Mitt Romney last year. It's only about a 30 second blip on the video in this link. www.mediaite.com/tv/brian-williams-asks-mitt-romney-about-his-mormon-faith-are-you-a-hidden-man/ As I noted I didn't see anyone really concerned with Romney being a Mormon except some extremist evangelical Christians that would probably freak out if a Muslim ran for president as well. How many whack-o right wingers still keep saying that Obama is a Muslim? I don't have current numbers but in 2010 46% of Republicans believed Obama was a Muslim. Now that's downright absurd. www.politico.com/blogs/joshgerstein/0810/Poll_46_of_GOP_thinks_Obamas_Muslim.html

The interview was to address Reza Aslan's book on Jesus, not on Muslims, and there is no question whatsoever that Reza Aslan is highly qualified to discuss the life of Jesus. The interview wasn't about discussing Islamic religious practices. Of course I find the oppression and violations of the Inalienable Rights of the Person by ALL religions historically to be objectionable and I certainly oppose any nation or laws being based upon invidious criteria such as religion beliefs or opinions. We can see that same oppression in the United States were Christians would violate the Inalienable Right of Self of the Woman, a Person, by prohibiting her from having an abortion even though the US Supreme Court has already ruled that the Woman, as a Person, has a Constitutional Right to have an abortion because it's her body.

I don't understand the attitude that this highly educated man is not qualified to write a book about the founder of Christianity. I am not qualified (at the tertiary level) in anything, but I would be perfectly entitled to write a book about Mormonism, Chrustianity, Islam, or Judaism. It would probably be uninformed drivel and set a sales record of unity (my mum would no doubt buy a copy) but it would be within my rights.
From what I know (or should I say from the propaganda to which I have been subjected,) the man known as Jesus of Nazareth was a wonderful and wise person. Someone whose values we should (but no one ever does, least of all judgmental Christians) emulate. I would be interested in reading any erudite treatise upon his life and circunstances.
The spiritual beliefs of this author have no bearing upon his work. If there are sections which show religious prejudice, they may be addressed accordingly, but his personal beliefs do not invalidate any facts he may set out. And what is the reason for questioning his motives? Basically, one buys a book if one finds the subject matter interesting, and one judges it worthwhile or not, by means of the content - the authors reasons for writing it are not really that important.

I would guess he is a lot more qualified than someone who only perceives Jesus as he appears to them as a result of a belief in a religion..........ie any Christian who has not studied the Bible to degree level. Anyone with the requisite knowledge to a high degree is qualified to write a book about anything they flaming well want. But only the religiously bigoted would say "a muslim is not "qualified" to write a book about Jesus". Why the hell not?
